CARE AND CLEANING TIPS FOR STERLING SILVER JEWELLERY
How to care for your jewellery
To care for your jewellery and keep it clean and ready to wear, gently wipe off excess make up and skin oil after each wearing. Use a nub free, 100% cotton cloth and gently wipe the piece clean using only the soft pads of your fingers. Store in jeweler’s tissue or soft bag. To help retard tarnish on sterling silver, wrap the piece in jeweler’s tissue paper and place it inside a plastic zip lock bag and seal.
What is sterling silver?
Sterling silver is an alloy ( a mix ) of silver containing 92.5% by mass of silver and 7.5%m by mass of other metals, usually copper. Hence why it is called 925 sterling silver. It’s the other metals that make the precious metal strong enough to work with and wear. Without them, fine silver would be too soft as a metal for the everyday wear of jewellery.
Cleaning sterling silver ( 925 silver )
Sterling silver is subject to tarnishing over time, resulting in dull or even black jewellery. Tarnishing occurs when sterling silver is exposed to oxygen and sulphur in the air. It is unavoidable, but, thankfully, it doesn’t damage the metal and can be removed easily with cleaning.
How to prevent tarnishing:
Simply wearing your sterling silver jewellery will slow the process of tarnishing. Being careful with how you store and wear sterling silver will also help reduce the speed of tarnishing.
Remove sterling silver rings and bracelets when washing your hands. Residue from soap and hand gels can result in a dull surface.
Keep sterling silver jewellery in separate airtight bags.
Avoid humid environments.
However, when the metal begins to look dull or starts to turn black, it is time to get the cleaning products out to get the jewellery looking like new.
How to clean sterling silver ( 925 silver ):
The simplest way to clean sterling silver is to buy a specialist cleaning solution or cloth. There are numerous examples on the market. Just make sure that they have been specifically designed for cleaning sterling silver. Sterling silver cloths should be soft and infused with anti-tarnishing agents.
What is gold plating?
Gold plating is a process where a thin layer of gold is bonded onto a base metal.
Our gold plated jewellery is made of sterling silver and covered with a double coating of 18k gold. This gold coating will eventually wear off revealing the sterling silver beneath To make this coating last longer we use a double layer of gold. To make the gold plating last longer please follow the instructions and tips given to you in this page. The instructions given for sterling silver in the first paragraph apply also for gold plated jewellery.
ATTENTION ! IN NO CASE SHOULD YOU USE ANTI– TARNISH AGENTS TO CLEAN YOUR GOLD PLATED JEWELLERY.
If you would like to clean your gold plated jewellery, just use a small amount of gentle dish soap and warm water. Then rinse it well and use a soft cloth to wipe your jewellery from the remaining water.
Gold plated Jewellery can be re-plated when losing their gold coating. We offer to our customers the first re-plating for free but customers are responsible for all shipping charges for re-plating.
